Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) was founded in 2010 with the aim of promoting and improving the welfare of donkeys and other animals. The organization is inspired by the vision that animals should be respected as living creatures that experience pain, fear, and suffering. Its mission is to protect all animals from torture, abuse, cruelty, diseases, and painful killing. It achieves this mission through community-centered approaches and interventions namely: public education on animal welfare and health, evidence-based policy advocacy geared towards promoting animal welfare and protection, delivery of basic veterinary services to grassroots communities through mobile clinics, working with formal learning institutions (including tertiary institutions/colleges) to promote positive behaviour change about animal welfare and equipping donkey owners, community members, paravets and veterinary medicine students with necessary skills and knowledge on care and treatment of animals, including donkeys.
