There are hundreds of organizations looking for volunteers and some examples of the projects you could join as a volunteer or intern are given below. Please be aware that our database acts as a complete information service for each project (i.e. description, location, email, website, phone, fax, language requirements, age requirements, commitment, cost etc). Research Volunteer - This private nature reserve invites proposals for research and study. Among the areas for potential research are: Baboons and their interactions with humans; Leopards and their relationship with farmers; and climate change. Volunteers receive free accommodation with facilities to prepare their own food.
Project Assistant - Volunteers are required to assist with building a lodge/camp and guiding of multi day river trips. On completion of the river guide training, volunteers will get a certificate which can be used on all rivers around the world. Other roles are available (i.e. community projects). Free board and lodging and excursions.
Regeneration Project - Volunteers are needed to help local people become more skilled and independent. Volunteers can help to train local residents in computer literacy, teach English, or get involved in a number of the environmental projects and enterprise initiatives. Return airfare, board and lodging are provided by the charity.
Volunteer at Primate Sanctuary - This project needs volunteers to fill the following positions: multilingual rangers/guides; students with photography/filming skills for documenting primates; volunteer coordinator; veterinarian. Accommodation with fully equipped kitchen provided but food costs extra (approx. £20 per week).
Volunteer Teachers - This project is seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals to work as volunteer teachers. It requires English language (TEFL certificate required) and qualified Mathematics and Science teachers. Volunteers contribute £350 to cover internal flight, accommodation and food for 6 or 12 months.
Organic Farming Project - This project offers opportunities to interested persons from different institutions and countries to experience tropical agriculture on an organic farm. In exchange for your work the project offers free accommodation and meals, social interaction, cultural exchanges, and promises lots of fun.
Chimpanzee Rescue Centre - Volunteers get involved with various operations at the sanctuary and the work includes helping with chimpanzee care and feeding, maintaining project equipment, assisting with construction projects, painting, and other manual tasks. Free accommodation and vegetarian meals are provided.
Help Children from Disadvantaged Backgrounds - Volunteers are needed for orphanage work, medical work, administrative duties, and teaching. There are also research opportunities in fields such as engineering, women studies, medicine, psychology, and sociology. The project costs £12.50 per week for board and lodging.
Meerkat Research Project - Volunteers learn a range of valuable skills and field techniques including observation, radio-tracking, research design, data handling and analysis. Accommodation is provided, and volunteers are paid a monthly allowance to cover their food and a contribution to their travel costs.
Conservation Training Centre Organiser - A volunteer is required to go and set up and then run a conservation centre. You will also help the project coordinator with office duties whilst there. Volunteers receive £250 per month plus expenses for a minimum contract of 12 months, accommodatin, local transport and training.
Non-Profit Management Intern - this position offers the opportunity to gain experience on the ground in the developing world. Day-to-day work will include assisting with public relations, marketing and various aspects of general management. Interns are offered room and board plus a small monthly stipend to help with living expenses.
Emergencies, Disaster Relief and Social Work- Join an international organisation working to alleviate human suffering through provision of life-support mechanisms in disaster hit areas. The projects costs £195 per month which includes food and accommodation. Short term volunteer assignments (1 - 3 weeks) also available.
Rhino Sanctuary Workcamp - This sanctuary provides prime habitat for the white rhinoceros and many other species of wild animals and birds. Volunteers assist with different activities such as park patrols and maintenance work. There is a participation fee of £100 (2 - 3 week workcamp) which includes food (own tent required).
African Wild Dog Conservation - The work of volunteers involves radio tracking wild dogs, wild dog identification, social and behavioural observations, prey counts, vegetation surveys, and various base camp duties. Field-work involves off-road driving. The projects are for 2 or 3 weeks and cost £270 per week.
Preservation Workshop - Help save some of Africa's architectural heritage. This project provides hands-on training in building conservation skills, and gives volunteers the opportunity to assist in the completion of preservation projects. No experience is necessary. £400 for lodging, meals, workshop materials, and field trips.
Cheetah Outreach - The aim of this project is to make as many people as possible aware of the plight of the cheetah and to campaign for its survival. The daily duties of volunteers include working hands-on with the public, food preparation, cleaning and various other tasks. Accommodation and food is provided.
Animal Welfare Project - The volunteer programme is intended to provide practical experience for people interested in making a difference through contributing towards animal welfare and conservation activities for a better world. Volunteers are provided with accommodation but are expected to pay for their own food.
Local Community Support - This project offers volunteer placements in an orphanage, a women's centre and a school. Volunteers are involved in a number of tasks including teaching, building, painting and creating websites etc. There is no cost to volunteer. A room with all meals in the nearby hostel costs £7.50 per day.
Empowerment and Social Transformation - This projects seeks college students, recent graduates, and professionals from all over the world to support its work in over 500 communities in Africa. Housing, work-related travel and some other costs are provided by the project.
English Speaking Volunteers - This project is looking for volunteer’s who speak English as their first language, no experience is necessary but teaching skills are a plus. In return for your time the project will provide free accomodation and fantastic hospitality. Volunteers should expect to spend at least £20 per month on food.
Full Time Teachers - This project seeks professional teachers to teach English grammar, writing, and English conversation to its students. Volunteers receive accommodation, food, and a small stipend to cover the cost of travel to school etc. The project also covers the cost of residence visa and work permit.
Volunteer at Children’s Home - Volunteers are invited to share their time or expertise with the children. There are opportunites in childcare, healthcare, teaching, administration, fundraising, building/carpentry, and many other areas. The project costs £10 per day which covers guesthouse accommodation and food.
Volunteer in Schools - The role of the volunteer is to facilitate programmes that improve the education of children at school. Your imagination is the limit. Volunteers are charged £15 per month for accommodation, £3.50 per day for food (3 meals daily), and £20 for airport pick-up and drop-off.
Development Workers - Volunteers are recruited to work in specific domains in response to requests from governments, NGOs and local communities. Positions are varied. Volunteers receive return flights, a modest living allowance/salary, rent-free accommodation, health insurance, equipment grants and much more.
Whale Shark Conservation - Volunteers help with the education programme in schools and hotels, assist with fundraising, assist with data collection and analysis, assist the guides on whale shark safaris, and help in the fibre-glass turtle workshop. The project costs £400 per month which includes board and lodging.
Football Coach - Volunteers assist local sports trainers by providing basic training for football players (i.e. ball control, speed work, technical skills and physical work). This is an excellent opportunity to learn about African football and local players. The project costs £200 for 2 weeks, £325 for 4 weeks, and £775 for 12 weeks.
Penguin Conservation - Volunteers at this sea bird rehabilitation centre are taught how to catch, hold, feed and tube feed Penguins, in addtion to many other tasks such as cleaning pens and assiting in the intensive care unit. No special skills required as all necessary training is provided. The project costs £55 for 6 weeks.
Assist Rural Communities - This project is looking for enthusiastic volunteers who have some experience of working with children. It needs people to teach English, run drama/dance workshops, and raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, conservation issues and techniques. Volunteers wil spend £5 per day on accommodation food.
Voluntary Park Rangers - This project provides the opportunity to serve as voluntary rangers, assisting in the upkeep, monitoring and patrolling of the park. Volunteers will be able to work with and learn about some fascinating wildlife. Basic accommodation is provided. Food can be bought in a nearby village.
Project Coordinator - The PC must manage project implementation activities in targeted communities, engaging local actors, training local coaches, and developing the basis for sustainable program delivery. All expenses paid (including flight) plus fixed stipend to assist with the cost of food etc (£4000 for a 12 month contract).
Medical Professionals – Volunteers (doctors, nurses, midwifes and psychologists) are required to help care for people who are victims of natural disasters, war, famine, disease, political repression and poverty. Transportation (flight), housing and food are provided, plus volunteers receive monthly living allowance (£200) and wages.
Healthcare Professionals - Volunteers are required to transfer their expertise on HIV care and infectious diseases to colleagues Africa. Positions are open now for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants as well as non-medical HIV/AIDS specialists. The host organisation covers all expenses including travel.
EcoVillage / Permaculture - Volunteers have the opportunity to experience an African ecovillage. A series of workshops covering permaculture design, eco-village development, sustainable building technology and landcare are offered. The project costs £1.50 - £2.50 per day for board and lodging.
