Volunteer Africa

News

There are many ways to help Africa without travelling overseas to join a volunteer programme. Many people are already aware of the importance of Fair Trade in the purchase of their daily latte or cappuccino, but nothing has highlighted this more than the highly acclaimed film Black Gold. The film focuses on the exploitation surrounding the world's second most valuable trading commodity after oil. It outlines the struggle of Tadesse Meskela of Ethiopia to save 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy caused by the artificially low prices paid for their crops brought on by the domination of the market by a handful of multinationals. You can find out more about this film and watch a movie trailor on the Black Gold website (see useful links).

Likewise, you can help children in South Africa by going to see the award winning film We Are Together. This is currently showing in UK cinemas. Filmed over three years, We Are Together tells the remarkable and moving story of a group of children who use music to overcome hardship and loss. It is the story of an orphanage, unlike one you've ever seen before, and of the drive of these remarkable young singers and their teachers to make it to London for a series of concerts. With unforgettable kids, soaring music and a plot full of surprises, We Are Together is a stirring and uplifting theatrical documentary. The filmmaker’s profits from the film and CD will be donated to charity. If you are thinking of volunteering this documentary is a must for you and your family.
