Africa
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia. At about 30,300,000 km˛ including adjacent islands, it covers 5.9% of the Earth's total surface area, and 20.3% of the total land area. With more than 840,000,000 people in 61 territories, it accounts for more than 12% of the world's human population and has over 1,000 different ethnic groups.
Africa is the oldest inhabited territory on earth, with the human species originating from the continent. It has produced or hosted many of the world's greatest civilisations, resulting in a rich legacy of ancient monuments such as the pyramids, temples and tombs of Egypt. In addition, the region contains spectacular wildlife and dramatic landscapes, from the Sahara to the Serengeti. You can snorkel and dive among the dazzling coral reefs of the Red Sea, focus on a pride of lions in the Okavango Delta, go beachcombing for seashells in the Seychelles, climb to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro or wander through the perfumed Kasbahs of Marrakesh.
South America is perhaps the only other continent that comes close to Africa in terms of scale, diversity or sheer impact on the senses. Africa is the place for adventurous travel, where stunning geography, lazy beaches, vivacious cultures and wildlife experiences will imprint themselves permanently on your mind.
